Project Nineteen by Blac Design & Build is a thoughtful take on modern family living — warm, welcoming, and designed to handle the pace of everyday life. From busy shared spaces to quieter retreat areas, every detail was carefully considered to create a home that feels both functional and beautifully refined.
We spoke with the Blac Design & Build team about the inspiration behind the design and the flooring choices that helped bring the vision to life.
Can you tell us about Project Nineteen and the vision behind the design?
The vision for Project Nineteen was to create a space that functioned for our ever-expanding lifestyle and included cosy areas defined by distinct zones.
Because we love to entertain friends and family, we designed the main living spaces to reflect this.
As the home is in a coastal village, I wanted it to reflect its surroundings but with a different approach: using darker timbers, warm tones and earthy textures to create a relaxed yet elevated space.

You’ve designed this home for modern family living – how did that influence your flooring choices?
With kids running around, pets, and an open house policy, we needed flooring choices that were hardy.
We didn't want to worry about being precious with our flooring, which is why we chose Quick-Step laminate and Malmo carpet.
What led you to choose Quick-Step Perspective Nature for the open-plan kitchen, living and dining areas?
We chose Quick-Step Perspective Nature throughout the main living area because of its colour and texture. It has a beautiful, natural-looking grain that adds warmth to the main living space and provides a stunning backdrop for the darker tones in the kitchen and the furniture selection for this home.

How did you select Malmo Madrid carpet for spaces like the bedrooms and media room?
I loved the lineal look of this loop pile carpet and wanted flooring that could handle heavy foot traffic, but at the same time add a cosy element and texture to the spaces.

What advice would you give homeowners when choosing flooring for a modern family home?
I would always suggest choosing flooring with a natural looking colour and grain so that your space doesn't feel flat and cold.
Make sure your flooring can handle heavy traffic and also UV exposure.
What part of Project Nineteen are you most proud of, and why?
The main living area in this project would be our most proud, as it really is where we spend most of our time, as a family and when we entertain. The colours and tones and overall feel that it has makes it inviting and somewhere you could easily spend the afternoon.
What was your experience working with Carpet Court Nelson on this project?
Our experience with Carpet Court was really positive. Rebecca, our main point of contact in Nelson, has a wealth of knowledge and always goes that extra mile.
